Побывал кот Батон у принцессы в гостях, изведал сладкой жизни, поспал на подушках бархатных, поел из мисок серебряных, и понял, наконец, что мягко спать и сладко есть – это не главное в жизни. Полюбил он свою хозяйку еще крепче и лениться перестал. Стал он думу думать, как угодить старушке, ночи не спит, мается. Наконец, придумал.

Повадились зайцы в хозяйский огород лазить, всю капусту обгрызли, уже и морковь подкапывать начали, беда да и только. Вот и надумал кот зайцев тех изловить или хотя бы испугать.

That is how Shadow the cat visited the princess and tried the sweet life, sleeping on velvet cushions and eating out of silver bowls until he finally realized that sleeping in comfort and eating delicacies was not the most important thing in life. Then he loved his Granny more than ever and stopped being lazy. He started thinking of how to please her and could not sleep at night for worrying about it. Finally, he came up with a plan.

Rabbits were in the habit of visiting Granny’s garden. They munched on all the cabbages and even started on the carrots, causing nothing but trouble. The cat decided to catch the rabbits or at least to scare them away.

День весь нежился на солнышке, на теплом крылечке полеживал, а как ночь наступила, выскользнул из избы, побежал на огород и залег в капустную грядку.

Долго таиться пришлось, ждали зайцы пока все в деревне уснут. Вот погасли огни во всех избах, затихли разговоры, погрузилось все в сон летний, тут-то зайчишки и пожаловали из леса на прокорм. И травы кажется в лугах полно, а капустка-то слаще. Уродилась в этом году она на славу, кочаны словно невиданные цветы огромной величины.
